Good Fathers Personify the Trinity

Happy Father’s Day to all of our dads, and thank you for saying “yes” to the vocation of being a father!

This week we also celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, which can best be described as a symphony of love; the Father and Son sharing a perfect love, the Spirit being the outpouring of love between Father and Son.

Of course no one has seen the Trinity and we won’t until we cross over from this life, but we are meant to personify the Trinity in how we live our lives. This is how we truly love one another as God has loved us.

I am blessed to still have my dad with me, and I see him just about every week.

Thinking about him, what comes to mind is how in so many ways he has really revealed who God is to me through how he has led his life.

A hard worker his whole life, he worked in maintenance in the Minneapolis school system, keeping the schools he served in great shape for the staff. He’d go the extra mile for the schools, going out of his way to help a teacher, and even a time or two played the guitar for the school kids as he took that up as a hobby.

And while he was busy at work, he was also busy around the house too. He’d work hard keeping our house looking great, as we had one of those older homes that could have been on “This Old House” in North Minneapolis before we moved to the northern suburbs in the summer of 1988. He’d also be there for my grandparents helping them as they got older. And he was also there for me growing up; he was always an active dad, whether we were going up to the park or for a bike ride or tossing a football around, or spending time together playing the Atari when I was a kid to cribbage these days. What he instilled with me was the faith in action; I’d see how he treated my mom and my sister and me with so much love and care, and how he’d take his jobs seriously, and it’s inspired me to try to do as he has done in how I live my life. It’s such a joy to continue to see him often, and to see how over the last 10 years he has become a loving grandfather to my nephew, Henry, inspiring him as he’s inspired me.

On this Father’s Day, a big “thank you” to our dads who do so much to reveal Jesus to us; to help us believe in ourselves and to grow; to help us learn how to love and live as a Christian. Never forget your words, your actions, and your love do so much to build us up and bring us closer to God.

May we never forget the Trinity shows us how to live. As humans there are so many barriers between us in how we mistreat one another, or don’t love one another as we should. We are all guilty of this, but the love of God is continually given to us. On our part may we respond to that by trying to love as God does, and may our eyes be open to how we can treat one another with love through our words and actions, especially within the sacred unit that is the family.

Have a very blessed Trinity Sunday and to all of our fathers, a very happy Fathers Day – thank you so much for your vocation! May Saint Joseph, Patron of Fathers, continue to bless you and guide you!
