General Confirmation Preparation Overview

St. Joseph Community has a 2-year preparation program for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Individuals can enroll in Year 1 of preparation as early as 9th grade (which would result in then Confirming in the spring of their 10th Grade). Preparation requirements are the same for those enrolled in Catholic High School as those enrolled in Public High School or Homeschooled. See below for Confirmation Requirements.

All families with Confirmation Candidates are automatically enrolled in the Family Formation model.

Questions? Contact us at sacraments@stjosephcommunity.org or 651-423-4402.

At-Home Lessons - "Chosen" Materials

Candidates will be provided a Bible, workbook, and online access to the "Chosen" videos (from Ascension Press). They will be expected to complete the assigned 2 lessons at home before attending their monthly small group discussion. Parents and sponsors are provided guide books as well to further the discussion and learning of the faith and the Sacrament at home.

Monthly Small Group Discussion

Candidates for Confirmation meet monthly during the Family Formation sessions for 90 minutes (Wednesday night or Saturday morning). During this time, candidates will be in small groups discussing the content they have covered at home, grow in fellowship with their peers, and discuss faith topics.

Retreat & Check-In Meeting

All Confirmation Candidates are required to attend an annual Retreat hosted at St. Joseph Community by NET Ministries. Two retreat options will be available to pick from each year. Candidates are required to attend a retreat in Year 1 AND Year 2 of preparation. (If a teen attends the Summer Steubenville Youth Conference, that can count as their Retreat requirement.)

After attending the Retreat, Candidates will select a 10-15 minute timeslot to meet with the Coordinator of Youth Evangelization & Discipleship to discuss how the retreat went as well as check-in to see how the preparation process is going thus far.

Youth Ministry Events

Confirmation Candidates will be required to attend at least 5 Youth Ministry events for each year of preparation. Youth Ministry events include (but not limited to): weekly youth group, Archdiocesan Youth Day, Steubenville Youth Conference, Saints & S'Mores, Mission Trip, etc. (events that are longer, such as a full-day or weekend would count for more than 1 qualifying event).

Volunteer Service Hours

Confirmation Candidates are required to volunteer 10 hours total per preparation year. 5 hours per year must be within the St. Joseph Community Parish and the other 5 hours can be anywhere else in the community.

Discernment

Prior to the Confirmation Mass, Candidates will go through a prayerful discernment process and then a final meeting with the Coordinator of Youth Evangelization & Discipleship to determine the Candidate's readiness to receive the Sacrament.

Paperwork

Each Candidate is required to provide a newly issued Baptismal certificate, a sponsor form, Saint name/reflection form, and record form. Those enrolled in preparation will receive additional information about required paperwork deadlines.

Teen or Adult with Special Needs?

Do you have a loved one with special needs looking to receive the Sacraments, but a traditional preparation program would not be ideal? Please connect with us to discuss options. Every person is unique and we want to work with you to help prepare them for the reception of the Sacraments. Contact Kayla.Rooney@stjosephcommunity.org or 651-313-8464 to begin the discussion.

Teen or Adult not Baptized, Confirmed, or received First Sacraments?

Are you a teen or adult looking to prepare for one of these Sacraments? We welcome you with open arms and would be honored to be a part of your Sacramental journey. Please contact the Parish Office at 651-423-4402 or Sacraments@StJosephCommunity.org for more information about our "Right of Christian Initiation for Adults" (RCIA) program.
