Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Come and See (Jn 1:39)

“Come and see!” These words echo the call that Jesus extended to His first disciples, inviting them to witness and experience the profound beauty of His teachings and presence. At the Church of St. Joseph, we are committed to fostering a deep understanding of the Catholic faith in our young learners. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for entrusting your child’s faith journey to the Church of St. Joseph.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) Program

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a shared religious experience for children and adults, emphasizing the inherent religious values of childhood, particularly the contemplation and enjoyment of God. This experience takes place in a specially prepared environment known as the Atrium. Inspired by Maria Montessori’s philosophy, CGS aims to foster children’s love for the Good Shepherd. The Church of St. Joseph is pleased to provide Level I, II, and III. Additionally, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to incorporate the CGS program into the curriculum for our Pre-School and Kindergarten students at St. Joseph School.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) First Sacraments

During First Sacraments, which is typically the second grade or the second year of Level 2, additional preparations are undertaken. At the start of the academic year, children eligible for first communion are encouraged to thoughtfully contemplate preparing for their first communion and first reconciliation. Our aim is to guide the child in making a choice based on their love and desire for Jesus; to accept the gifts He offers through the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. Both children and parents participate in three scriptural meditations that nurture a desire for Reconciliation and connect it to the celebration of the Eucharist. These meditations revolve around the True Vine I and II, the Found Coin and Found Sheep, the Forgiving Father, and the Centurion’s Servant.

The preparation for First Holy Communion reaches its peak with a special retreat held on the Friday evening and Saturday just before the First Communion Mass on Saturday. Post-Mass, the children are invited back to the Atrium to take photos and continue their celebration with their loved ones.
